"Get Your Head in the Game: Connect with Peers, Meet a Mentor, Leave a Legacy”

Women in Sports Business MBA Scholarship

Part of the 2007 WSBS initiative was to announce the development of an endowed scholarship fund for female MBA students in the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon. This idea was spear-headed by past WSBS panelist and career counselor, Cathy Griffin, and her three principal founding partners: past WSBS Woman of the Year Award recipients Val Ackerman and Lee Ann Daly, and past WSBS panelist Paula Votaw-Miller. 2007 WSBS Woman of the Year Ilana Kloss also contributed substantially to this effort.

In keeping with the spirit of the Symposium, the goal of the scholarship fund is to contribute materially to the emergence of women in sports by providing future female sports business leaders with financial resources to achieve their educational goals. We hope that you will consider contributing to this effort.

Cathy Griffin - Founder of Own Your Own CareerEven if you don’t know her, Cathy Griffin is THE person you will need to speak with regarding one of the most important elements in your life – your career. Whether it’s maximizing your potential in your current role, changing career directions, or climbing up or down the corporate ladder, she will provide you with the right plan and motivate you into action.

Cathy Griffin is a graduate of corporate America, having served in a variety of senior marketing roles at Fortune 500 companies, including PepsiCo and TimeWarner. She later transitioned into the executive recruiting industry with two of the world’s leading executive search firms, AT Kearney and Korn/Ferry International.

In 1993, while enjoying a highly successful career, Cathy suffered a major head injury and lived through a near death experience after a snowmobile accident. Initially in a coma for two weeks and paralyzed on her right side, few expected her to recover. But through diligent hard work, extraordinary focus, persistent determination and the unwavering support of others, Cathy learned how to walk and talk again in record time. With seemingly insurmountable obstacles confronting her, including bouts of negative self-esteem, Cathy’s family, friends, and support team witnessed her setting progressive goals, refusing to take no for an answer and rapidly winning the battle of recovery.

Cathy is a well established and highly respected Career Coach headquartered in Los Angeles. She has the unique advantage of being able to see success in the workplace and the career management process through a “new and different set of eyes.”

She inspires others by teaching from her own experiences and opens doors for them that were previously viewed as permanently closed. Cathy encourages people to take ownership of their careers by helping them master the skills necessary to not only survive but also excel in today’s workplace. She energizes people to increase their human potential. Her message: “Take inventory, manage the process, OWN your career, and accept happiness as your reward.”

Recognized internationally for her expertise in a variety of industries, Cathy is also a popular and sought after motivational speaker and guest panelist. She has worked as a television reporter in addition to hosting her own radio show in New York City.

“With time, companies change, industries change, and the economy changes – but most importantly, you change”. Cathy acknowledges: This information is Power!
